local area offers beautiful unspoilt beaches, coastal walks, spectacular
cliffs, castles, an abundance of wildlife and a variety of leisure
activities including golf, fishing and whale and dolphin watching.
Beaches
Some
of the best beaches in Britain are on the coast of the Scottish
Highlands. Portmahomack has a lovely sandy beach where you can
enjoy swimming, wind-surfing, water skiing etc. Shandwick, Nigg
and Balintore also have splendid beaches. Dornoch is approximately
10 miles away and with a long stretch of beautiful sandy beach
is certainly not to be missed. A walk of about 30 minutes from
the cottage leads to our local beach where you can walk along
the coast in either direction to Portmahomack or to Hilton.

number of spectacular Pictish Stones in the area include the Shandwick
Stone which is still in its original location.

watching
Bird
watchers will be particularly impressed with regular sightings
(dependent on time of year) of:

• Greenfinches, chaffinches and yellow hammers
• Cormorants, shags and waders
• Buzzards and kestrels
• Great black-backed gulls and herring gulls
• Swallows, house martins and pied wagtails
• Song thrushes, robins, great tits, blue tits and tree

town of Tain is approximately 8 miles from the cottage and offers
a choice of shops, banks, supermarkets, hotels and restaurants.
Fearn is about 4 miles away and has a village store / butcher
shop with post office
Portmahomack,
a pretty seaside village within 5 miles, also offers a shop, 2
hotels and the famous Oyster Catcher Restaurant.
